Service Learning

Service Learning

The University of Belize is committed to fostering moral and ethical development in all students and has designed an interactive, multi-sector service learning program to allow students from all academic faculties and majors on each university campus to be able to volunteer their time and skillsets for the betterment of their communities and the larger society.

The program is managed out of the Student Affairs Department and ensures that UB students are placed at institutions, organizations or government departments across the country where the students provide skills that they have learned or are learning at UB. In this manner, the recipient institution, organization or department will get a higher quality service and the student volunteer will get a more meaningful experience. This approach ensures true benefits for both parties. Students can use the service learning program to complete community service required for some scholarships or can use it to build their own service portfolios and their character.

To participate, students contact the Department of Student Affairs by using the button below to get a fillable, online, registration form. The form asks students to identify their skills and area of study. The staff then uses this information to identify a donor agency where the student’s identified skills are most needed. The department of student affairs then discusses the options with the student and orients the student to the experience. Once the student decides on a donor institution, he or she will provide his or her service voluntarily while being supervised. The supervisor signs to confirm the students’ hours of service throughout the experience and the university co-authors a report at the end along with the student. All students who volunteer in the service learning program receive a Certificate of Merit for their volunteerism and Social Responsibility.

The Department of Student Affairs also organizes periodic service initiatives in response to special needs that arise in society. These include helping fire victims, arranging blood donation campaigns for people who are in dire need, coordinating clean up initiatives after natural disasters or fund raising to help students who suffer crises or who have unique opportunities to travel abroad to represent the university or country. In these cases, the Coordinator of Student Services works along with student volunteers to organize these activities. Students who volunteer for these types of activities are supervised and documented as all other students who participate in the service learning program.
